7. FONTS
7.1 Fonts (PCL)
Fonts are divided broadly into two types, bitmap and scalable (outline) fonts.
7.1.1 Bitmap Fonts
(1) Bitmap fonts are numeric data that is converted as bitmap patterns directly from character
images.
(2) Portrait fonts can be rotated in increments of 90 degrees, or equivalently, printed in por-
trait, landscape, reverse portrait and reverse landscape orientations in one character pat-
tern.
7.1.2 Scalable Fonts
Scalable fonts (outline fonts) are numeric data that is converted from the coordinates of the
edges of character images according to specific mathematical rules.
An exclusive rasterizer is used to make bitmap patterns of the edges to generate and print the
character images.
There are several types of such mathematical rules. 2D Bezier, 2D B-Spline, 3D Bezier or any
other rules are used depending on each font type.
Scalable fonts are independently and freely scalable in vertical and horizontal directions, and
can be rotated at any angle, flipped from side to side (to create their mirror images), slanted
and boldfaced.
It takes much time for scalable fonts to be rasterized. Bitmap patterns of characters are there-
fore retained in cache memory.
7.2 Rasterizer
A rasterizer is a module that reads scalable font data to generate bitmap patterns and edge
information based on conditions, such as scaling factors and rotation angles.
B410/B420/B430/B440 printers use UFST4.0 (PCL) from Agfa Monotype Corporation.
7.2.1 Font Caches
Rasterizer-generated bitmap patterns are once stored in cache memory. When used next
time, the elements that are the same characters as those used, and also have the same attri-
butes as those used are copied without being processed with a rasterizer.
Bitmap fonts given modifications including rotations, as well as scalable fonts, are cached.
